How to prevent slips and trips - Horndean care home hosts free advice event

How to prevent slips and trips - Horndean care home hosts free advice eventA care home in Horndean is inviting local people to a free event where they can learn more about preventing falls among older people.

On Wednesday 29th January, from 11am-1pm, Care UK’s Pear Tree Court, on Portsmouth Road, is welcoming an expert to give advice to the local community at its fall prevention and awareness event.

Physiotherapist Sarah Watkinson will be on hand to provide expert guidance on preventing falls, reducing balance problems and maintaining independence. During the event there will be a chance to learn the common causes of slips and falls and discover ways of preventing them at home. Sarah will also offer helpful advice and tips on activities and exercises that improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.

There will also be an optional Tai Chi session, led by professional instructor Mark Lythgoe, featuring an array of practical exercises designed to improve balance, breathing, mobility and concentration.

This event also provides members of the local community with the opportunity to meet the friendly team at Pear Tree Court and take a closer look at the care home.

David Taylor, home manager at Pear Tree Court, said: “Here at Pear Tree Court, we strive to provide in-depth advice to people in the local community on topics relating to our work. To prevent health issues that occasionally occur from accidental falls, it is very important to the team and to the wellbeing of the residents that we provide essential information on falls prevention.

“It is imperative that we create a safe environment for older people in the community, and ensure that family and friends have the correct information to prevent accidents. Combined with the benefits of practical Tai Chi exercises, this is set to be an inspiring afternoon of advice and guidance, so we are looking forward to welcoming local people to Pear Tree Court.”

Pear Tree Court is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.  Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema and hair salon, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation. The home has a comprehensive activity programme, offering a mix of themed events, group activities and days out.
