Bird is the word! Whitstable care home residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British

Bird is the word! Whitstable care home residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British birdsResidents at a care home in Whitstable are gearing up to take part in some avian-themed activities this January.

Inspired by the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which takes place from Saturday 25th to Monday 27th January, residents will be taking part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, as well as topping up their bird feeders and counting the species in their garden.

Alongside Care UK homes across the country, Harrier Lodge, on Thanet Way, will be celebrating the best of British birds by taking part in a falconry session, which includes flying displays and handling and interacting with the birds.

The home will also make one of the residents wishes come true. Sheila Dickenson has always wanted to fly an owl, so will get her chance on the special bird-themed weekend.

The home has also invited Joy Lane Primary School to join them for the occasion to take part in a bird watching session on Friday 24th January.

Diane Collins, home manager at Harrier Lodge, explained why discovering our local wildlife is so important: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities and learning more about the beautiful environment we live in.

“Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature around us can prove to be beneficial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of older people – particularly those living with dementia. While it is a calming, peaceful activity, the distinctive sounds and vibrant colours of the garden are also great for providing sensory stimulation.

“It’s brilliant to be getting involved with such a meaningful initiative and encouraging everyone to take notice of the beautiful wildlife Britain has to offer. We’re looking forward to welcoming the pupils from Joy Lane Primary School into the home to celebrate the best of British birds with us too!”
