Bird is the word! St Ives care home residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British birdsResidents at a care home in St Ives are gearing up to take part in some avian-themed activities this January.

Inspired by the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which takes place from Saturday 25th January to Monday 27th January, residents will be taking part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, as well as topping up their bird feeders and counting the birds in their garden.

Alongside Care UK homes across the country, Field Lodge, on London Road, will be celebrating the best of British birds by welcoming representatives from The Raptor Foundation to share their knowledge on the rehabilitation and conservation of birds of prey.

Linda Martinez, home manager at Field Lodge, explained why exploring our wildlife is an important activity: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities and learning more about the beautiful environment we live in.

“Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature around us can prove to be beneficial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of older people – particularly those living with dementia. While it is a calming, peaceful activity, the distinctive sounds and vibrant colours of the garden are also great for providing sensory stimulation.

“It’s brilliant to be getting involved with such a meaningful initiative and encouraging everyone to take notice of the beautiful wildlife Britain has to offer. We’re looking forward to welcoming The Raptor Foundation to celebrate the best of British birds by teaching us more about birds of prey too!”
