Bird is the word! Sevenoaks care home residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British

Residents at a care home in Sevenoaks are gearing up to take part in some avian-themed activities this January.

Inspired by the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which takes place from Saturday 25^th to Monday 27^th January, residents will be taking part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, as well as topping up their bird feeders and counting the species in their garden.

Alongside Care UK homes across the country, Weald Heights, on Bourchier Close, will be celebrating the best of British birds by taking part in birdwatching.

Residents from Weald Heights will be visiting Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve on 22^nd January to catch a glimpse of the numerous birds, including grey herons, kingfisher and grey wagtails and other wildlife. The residents are looking forward to spotting the different birds and have their binoculars ready.

The home has also invited Lady Boswell School to join them on 24^th January for birdwatching at the home, where seven students will be coming with their teacher to help count the birds.

Maria Covington, home manager at Weald Heights, explained why discovering our local wildlife is so important: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities and learning more about the beautiful environment we live in.

“Spending time outdoors and connecting with the nature around us can prove to be beneficial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of older people – particularly those living with dementia. While it is a calming, peaceful activity, the distinctive sounds and vibrant colours of the garden are also great for providing sensory stimulation.  

“It’s brilliant to be getting involved with such a meaningful initiative and encouraging everyone to take notice of the beautiful wildlife Britain has to offer. We’re looking forward to welcoming the pupils from Lady Boswell School into the home to celebrate the best of British birds with us too!”
