Bird is the word! Harrow care home residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British birdsResidents at a care home in Harrow are gearing up to take part in some avian-themed activities this January.

Inspired by the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which takes place from Saturday 25th January to Monday 27th January, residents will be taking part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, as well as topping up their bird feeders and counting the birds in their garden.

On Monday 27th January, from 11am-4pm, Care UK’s Buchanan Court, on Sudbury Hill, will be celebrating the best of British birds by turning its café into a bird sanctuary, featuring bird songs and bird-related decorations specially crafted by the residents.

The community is also invited to take part in a nature-themed musical quiz, and to find out more about how to create bird boxes and insect boxes from recycled materials during a special talk from the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust.

Ruth Halls, home manager at Buchanan Court, explained why exploring our wildlife is an important activity: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities and learning more about the beautiful environment we live in.

“Spending time outdoors and connecting with the nature around us can prove to be beneficial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of older people – particularly those living with dementia. While it is a calming, peaceful activity, the distinctive sounds and vibrant colours of the garden are also great for providing sensory stimulation.

“It’s brilliant to be getting involved with such a meaningful initiative and encouraging everyone to take notice of the beautiful wildlife Britain has to offer. We’re looking forward to welcoming the local community into the home to celebrate the best of British birds with us too!”
