Bird is the word! Edinburgh care homes residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British

Bird is the word! Edinburgh care homes residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British birdsResidents at three care homes in Edinburgh are gearing up to take part in some avian-themed activities this January.

Inspired by the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which takes place from Saturday 25th to Monday 27th January, residents will be taking part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, as well as topping up their bird feeders and counting the species in their garden.

Alongside Care UK homes across the country, Murrayside on South Beechwood, Lauder Lodge on Wakefield Avenue and Cairdean House on Redford Road, will all be celebrating the best of British birds with an array of bird-related activities.

In preparation for the event, Murrayside residents will be making fat balls to attract more birds into the garden, and will be joined by pupils from Corstorphine Primary School for a special birdwatching session. Residents will also have the opportunity to take part in a ‘show and tell’ workshop featuring a variety of owls from Falconry Scotland.

Lauder Lodge will also welcome a number of owls from Owl Magic into the home, followed a birdwatching session at the Royal Botanic Gardens the next day.

Michelle Reid, home manager at Murrayside, explained why discovering our local wildlife is so important: “Everyone is really looking forward to celebrating British birds this January and learning more about our feathered friends. We’ve been researching British birds common to Edinburgh and are very excited to be spotting the birds in our garden with pupils from Corstorphine Primary School.”

Nicole Anderson, home manager at Lauder Lodge, added: “Residents here at Lauder Lodge have a keen interest in nature, so we thought that researching local birds, as well as hosting a special owl visit would be the perfect way to discover local wildlife. We’d like to thank RSPB for inspiring us to get involved - we can’t wait to get started!”
