Bird is the word! Cheadle care home residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British birdsResidents at a care home in Cheadle are gearing up to take part in some avian-themed activities this January.

Inspired by the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which takes place from Saturday 25th to Monday 27th January, residents will be taking part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, as well as topping up their bird feeders and counting the species in their garden.

Alongside Care UK homes across the country, Abney Court, in Abney Hall Park, will be celebrating the best of British birds with a special visit from representatives from the Lower Moss Wood Education Reserve and Wildlife Hospital, who will be bringing owls and buzzards for residents to meet up close.

Pupils from Cheadle Primary School and the Laurus Academy will be joining residents for a host of fun activities, including a nature-themed quiz and bird bingo. Residents will also be making bird cakes and feeders to entice the many different birds from the park into the home’s grounds.

Helen Parry, home manager at Abney Court, explained why discovering our local wildlife is so important: “We all love getting outside, enjoying the fresh air and spending time with nature here at Abney Court, so we’ve invited our local schools along to help us take part in some nature-based activities, inspired by RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

“Birdwatching is an accessible activity that those of all ages and abilities can enjoy together, and a great opportunity for the local community to join us. Intergenerational relationships benefit everyone, allowing us to learn from one another, and have fun along the way.

“We can’t wait to welcome the pupils to the home – it promises to be a real hoot!”

Abney Court has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
