Bird is the word! Banbury care home residents spread their wings to celebrate the best of British birdsResidents at a care home in Banbury are gearing up to take part in some avian-themed activities this January.

Inspired by the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which takes place from Saturday 25th to Monday 27th January, residents will be taking part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, as well as topping up their bird feeders and counting the species in their garden.

Alongside Care UK homes across the country, Highmarket House, on North Bar Place, will be celebrating the best of British birds by enjoying a visit from Fir Tree Falconry, as well as inviting children from Rainbows Day Nursery.

Jo Pohl, home manager at Highmarket House, explained why discovering our local wildlife is so important: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities and learning more about the beautiful environment we live in.

“Spending time outdoors and connecting with the nature around us can prove to be beneficial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of older people – particularly those living with dementia. While it is a calming, peaceful activity, the distinctive sounds and vibrant colours of the garden are also great for providing sensory stimulation.

“It’s brilliant to be getting involved with such a meaningful initiative and encouraging everyone to take notice of the beautiful wildlife Britain has to offer. We’re looking forward to welcoming Fir Tree Falconry and the children from Rainbows Day Nursery into the home to celebrate the best of British birds with us too!”

Highmarket House is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, dementia, nursing and short-term respite care. The home, which features 73 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence.
