Worcester care home hosts cosy ‘Hygge’ night for Scouts

A Worcester care home has made the most of the darker nights and dipping temperatures by hosting a cosy ‘Hygge’ night for a local Scout group.

Care UK’s Perry Manor, on Charles Hastings Way, welcomed girls and boys from 20^th Worcester Scouts for a special evening of fun and friendship, helping one Scout in particular secure his Digital Citizen Badge.

The Scouts served hot chocolate with biscuits, popcorn and chocolates to the residents during the hygge night. During this special session some of the residents particularly enjoyed reminiscing about their time in Scouts in their younger years.

Katherine Matthews, home manager at Perry Manor, said: “We have a very close relationship with 20^th Worcester Scouts which sees us regularly host visits and intergenerational activities. This is the first time we have run an evening event in the home, which was built around the Danish wellbeing concept of Hygge. We all donned our PJs and enjoyed a cosy film screening in our cinema, complete with a campfire sing-along. As always it was a delight to welcome the Scouts in to our home.

“This kind of activity delivers powerful benefits for all – both young and older people really profit from the social interaction, boosting the children’s confidence and communication skills in particular.”

Tiffany Thompson, lifestyle co-ordinator at Perry Manor, said: “Seeing the different generations together is such a joy, the Scouts are all so caring, courteous and helpful whenever they visit. They are all keen to learn new skills and knowledge, so I worked with the Scout Leader to create this fun-filled evening and took the opportunity to share my professional knowledge on dementia. We want these Scouts to understand what life is like living with the condition, to help them engage and interact with all older people.

“We have had nothing but positive feedback from the residents and the Scouts, who enjoy spending time with each other. They can’t wait for our next event!”  

Helen Russell, leader at 20^th Worcester Scouts, added: “Our Scouts have gained so much from the different volunteering days at Perry Manor over the last year. By coming in the evening for a low-key, fun event I'm hoping that those who haven't had the courage to volunteer in the past might feel more confident trying it next time. The evening itself was so beneficial for the Scouts and the residents, and I particularly enjoyed our impromptu campfire sing-along!”

Young Scout Harry, commented: “I love going to visit the residents at Perry Manor, they are always so friendly and welcoming. I really enjoy listening to their stories about when they were my age, and in the Scouts or Girl Guides. Our hygge night was the perfect time for the first screening of the short film I’ve created about the 20th Worcester Scout Group, as part of my Digital Citizen badge. The residents loved it and complimented me on my skills. I am really proud to be a Scout and the strong relationship we have built with residents at Perry Manor."

Resident Joan Preedy added, “It was a wonderful evening filled with smiles and laughter throughout the generations! We’re looking forward to seeing the Scouts group again very soon.”
