Team member at Stansted care home makes the finals in Essex Care Sector Awards

From creating a pub in a care home, to building a ‘Lapland log cabin’, Peter Birsan, maintenance manager at a care home in Stansted is celebrating after being shortlisted in the Essex Care Sector Awards.

Peter Birsan, maintenance manager at Care UK’s Mountfitchet House, on Coltsfield, has made it to the final stage in the ‘Unsung Hero’ category in the awards, which recognise those delivering quality care services in Essex. The home has also been shortlisted in the ‘End of Life Care’ category.

The regional awards celebrate excellence and shine a light on the work that individuals and care providers undertake.

Peter has been recognised for going above and beyond in his role, and for his commitment to ensuring residents live fulfilling lives. Praised for his contribution not only to Mountfitchet House, but also to other Care UK homes across Essex and Hertfordshire, Peter has been described by colleagues as “extremely generous”.

Not only does Peter maintain the safety of the home each day, he often comes up with new ways to enhance the shared spaces around the home. Following the closure of a local pub, he dismantled the bar and re-built it in an under-used hobby room, creating a pub within the home, and also transformed the neighbouring balcony into a beer garden.

Peter regularly involves himself in events taking place within the home, joining in with residents and using his skills to enhance activities. When residents planned a visit to ‘Lapland’ before Christmas, Peter created a log cabin, complete with artificial snow, for everyone to enjoy.

Allison Squires, home manager at Mountfitchet House, said: “We are thrilled that Peter has been shortlisted in the ‘Unsung Hero’ category in this year’s Essex Care Sector Awards.

“Here at Mountfitchet House, we are very proud of the wonderful environment we have created, and strive to ensure that residents continue to live enjoyable and fulfilled lives. Peter plays an integral part in making this happen, and I’d like to thank him for all of his hard work, which is greatly appreciated by residents and their families.

“We’d like to wish good luck to everyone who has made the finals - we’re looking forward to the awards ceremony and have our fingers crossed for Peter!”

Mountfitchet House has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential and nursing care, as well as short-term respite.
