Sherry instead of water – 102-year-old Sevenoaks resident reveals the secret to a long life

PDF icon 8004-CWF7166-Key facts sheets-2pp A4-core-Collingwood Court.pdfBirthday celebrations were in full swing at Care UK’s Weald Heights, on Bourchier Close, when resident, Muriel Rowland, celebrated her birthday. Muriel turned 102 years ‘young’ in October and believes the secret to a long life is due to never drinking a glass of water in her whole life. Instead she prefers the occasional glass of sherry!

To celebrate her milestone birthday, Muriel was joined by family, friends and residents for a party hosted by the team at the care home. Everyone toasted Muriel’s good health with a glass of wine and tucked into a slice of birthday cake.

Muriel was born in 1917, in Lambeth, South London, where she lived her whole life, including during the war where she witnessed the Blitz. It was also where she met her husband, Arthur. She moved to Weald Heights earlier this year.

After the war ended, Muriel and Arthur began working for Arthur’s father, a funeral director, as part of the family business. Muriel kept the records for the company – a job she did right up until the age of 100.

Maria Covington, home manager at Weald Heights, said: “We love to celebrate all residents here at Weald Heights, especially on their birthdays, so it was terrific to be able to commemorate an occasion as special as Muriel’s 102nd birthday.

“It was so fantastic to see Muriel enjoying this incredible milestone with her family and friends at Weald Heights. She is quite a character, and has built lovely friendships with residents and the team since moving here in September this year, so it was wonderful to raise a glass to her on this special occasion.”

The ethos at Weald Heights is based on person-centred care, which means residents’ values are right at the heart of the home. Choice, variety and luxury are built into every aspect of life at Weald Heights, which offers a combination of professional, individualised care and luxury hotel-style comfort.
