The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Care UK’s Pear Tree Court, on Portsmouth Road, an overall ‘Good’ rating, following an unannounced inspection.
Inspectors praised Pear Tree Court team members for their positivity and the level of care each of them showed to residents, who described them as ‘very caring’. Commenting on the difference the team members make to residents, one relative said: “I’ve got my smiley dad back”.
This person-centred approach is embedded in Pear Tree Court’s ethos and carried through to everyday life at the home. As such, the team had enabled a resident to continue living with their cat at the home, which was very important to them, providing the pet with its own ‘cat care plan’.
The report highlighted that Pear Tree Court had been specially designed around residents’ needs, including those living with dementia. For example, several objects of interest were available in the home’s hallway, including a tool bench, clothes dryer and vintage sewing machine, while another room was decorated in the style of an office with objects from the past. There was also LED lighting in bathroom, stimulating the night sky, and special lighting and decoration to assist residents with perception and orientation.
The report found that team at Pear Tree Court actively promoted independence, by encouraging residents to walk, lead an activity or assist on reception, as well as placing memory boxes outside residents’ rooms, which contained personal items outside their rooms to help residents identify their room more easily. Residents were also encouraged to get involved in the interview panel for prospective entertainers at the home following feedback shared during a residents’ meeting.
The range of activities on offer every day of the week, from group activities to one-to-one time, was also commended by the inspectors and residents alike. One resident commented: “I like the volley ball”. A relative added: “Activities can be fun and light-hearted, there’s always something happening, even at weekends.”
