Pear Tree Court cooks up a storm for arty open day

There were celebrations all round when the team at Pear Tree Court welcomed the local community in for a day of art-themed fun and games.

The team at Pear Tree Court were joined by local people for Care Home Open Day, a countrywide initiative set up to develop lasting relationships between care homes and local communities, and to dispel common myths about care home life.

This year’s theme celebrated the role of arts within care, which is important in encouraging residents’ self-expression, and helps to create meaningful experiences.

On the day, Pear Tree Court hosted a special charity bake-off contest, where team members showcased their culinary skills and prepared eleven cakes for a jury made up of sweet-toothed residents. The baking showdown, won by Pear Tree Court lifestyle coordinator Fiona Berryman and her homemade carrot cake, helped raise £230 for Stand Up To Cancer.

Visitors also had the opportunity to browse an array of arts and crafts stalls.

As part of a nationwide competition for all Care UK homes, Pear Tree Court developed a work of art in the lead up to the open day, which was unveiled at the event, as well as an impressive three-tier knitted cake, specially crafted by resident Phyllis Restall.

Helen Kalnicky, home manager at Pear Tree Court, said: “Everyone at Pear Tree Court had a wonderful time celebrating with the local community for Care Home Open Day 2019. This year’s theme of ‘Celebrating Arts in Care’ was a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase all the brilliant activities we get up to on a daily basis here at Pear Tree Court – hats off to Phyllis for her fantastic knitted cake, which was the main talking point on the day!

“The people of Horndean have always been welcoming to us, it’s great to host everyone for a day of fun in the sun.”
