Manor Lodge marks the 65th anniversary of rock ‘n’ roll

Residents at Manor Lodge stepped back in time and danced away the afternoon to the sound of rock ‘n’ roll classics from their youth.

Manor Lodge marks the 65th anniversary of rock ‘n’ roll

Manor Lodge threw the 1950s-themed celebration to mark the 65th anniversary of the launch of the record Rock Around the Clock, widely considered Britain’s first rock ‘n’ roll anthem.

To celebrate, the care team arranged a classic car show at the home so residents could sit in the vehicles and reminisce about driving in the 1950s. The collection of cars, belonging to local car enthusiasts Sean Hensher-Smith and Tony Abrahall, included a 1956 Chevrolet and 1958 Rocket 88.

Residents and the team also dressed up in 1950s inspired outfits, and listened to classic rock ‘n’ roll hits from local entertainer, Tim Arthur, to get everyone’s feet tapping.

The nationwide initiative, launched by Care UK, encouraged its care homes across the country to get together and host rock ‘n’ roll-themed events to mark this iconic anniversary. As well as having fun, the events were the perfect opportunity for residents to reminisce about their younger years and share memories associated with the 1950s.

Juliana Miles, home manager at Manor Lodge, said: “People often imagine that care home residents are only interested in big band music or Val Doonican, but today’s event has shown me that we have plenty of rock ‘n’ rollers living in Manor Lodge. We had a fantastic time reliving memories from the 1950s and many of my team learnt a thing or two about what it was like to be a rebellious teenager in that decade!”
