On Monday 20th May, from 2pm-4pm, Buchanan Court on Sudbury Hill is inviting the local community to a 1950s-themed event. This is to mark the 65th anniversary of Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets, which widely considered the world’s first rock ‘n’ roll anthem.
Guests can swing and jive to live entertainment from an Elvis impersonator, while the home will be adorned with 1950s memorabilia, giving everyone an opportunity to step back in time.
The nationwide initiative, launched by Care UK, sees care homes across the country get together to host rock ‘n’ roll-themed events. The aim is to encourage residents to reminisce about their younger years and share memories of life in the 1950s.
Ruth Halls, home manager at Buchanan Court, said: “The community is an important part of life here at Buchanan Court, so we’re excited to take a trip down memory lane with everyone to mark the 65th anniversary of Rock Around the Clock.
“Singing and dancing can be a powerful reminiscence activity, and our event is sure to bring back a lot of memories, as many residents witnessed the birth of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s. We’re looking forward to welcoming local people to celebrate with us – and perhaps even learn a dance move or two.”
