The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Chandler Court an overall ‘good’ rating, following an unannounced inspection.
The care home received ‘good’ ratings in all five categories, including safety, effectiveness, level of care, responsiveness and having a well-led service.
Inspectors commended the interactions between the team and residents. The report noted that team members knew residents well, and could talk to them about events and interests that were personal to them. The report also noted that residents were treated with dignity and respect. One resident commented: “You aren’t made to feel like a nuisance when you ask for things” and another has added: “You never wait for the call bell (to be answered) there’s always somebody about.”
In the report it was noted that the home offered a wide range of activities for people of all abilities. A bridge club had been created by a resident supported by the lifestyle team, and members of the community had been invited to learn to play. A resident commented: "The [team members] are so kind here, it’s been more like being on a holiday”. Residents were also supported to maintain friendships and traditions, with one person having a party with his friends for the Cheltenham Gold cup, as he had previously done at his own home.
The inspectors commented that strong links had been made with the local community, with children from the local nursery school visiting regularly, and plans to extend community links further in the future via dementia awareness talks at the home for the public to attend. The report highlighted that visitors to the home felt welcomed by team members, with one commenting: “Everybody knows everybody’s name, not just residents but families too”.
It was also noted that residents were supported to maintain a balanced diet, with one individual commenting: “The food is really good”. Care plans detailing people's food preferences and any special dietary needs were in place, and these were shared with the home’s chef via the daily handover meeting.
Commenting on the ‘good’ rating, Jo Gill, home manager at Chandler Court, said: “Creating a welcoming home-from-home feel, and making sure every resident receives the best possible care, is our absolute priority. Everyone here at Chandler Courtworks incredibly hard to provide residents with compassionate, person-centred care, and I’m delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the CQC’s inspectors.
“I’m extremely proud of the team and would like to say thank you for their hard work and dedication, which I know is also greatly appreciated by residents and their families.”
