National inspectors praise Colne View

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Care UK’s Colne View care home, on Dame Mary Walk, an overall ‘good’ rating, following an unannounced inspection.

National inspectors praise Colne View

Colne View was rated ‘good’ in all five categories, which include safety, effectiveness, caring, leadership, and responsiveness.

CQC inspectors noted that residents felt safe at Colne View, and the team demonstrated their knowledge by ensuring safeguarding protocols were in place across the home. One resident told inspectors: “They are keen on health and safety, I am not very tidy [so] they put my stuff away so I don't fall over things", with another resident adding: “I feel safe. There aren't any of the staff I feel uncomfortable with.”

The team were praised for the care they gave to residents, including treatment and support that promoted a good quality of life. Residents were encouraged to maintain a balanced diet, and were provided with a choice of food, drink, and snacks throughout the day. Those living with dementia were presented with visual, plated meal options so they could make an easier decision. A resident commented: “The food is excellent... We have plenty of choice and if you don't like what is on the menu they chat to you, and we come to a decision about what to eat instead."

Colne View was praised for its attention to detail with décor, particularly how rooms were adapted to meet residents’ needs. Inspectors noted that the home was purpose built, with sufficient communal spaces for residents, friends and families. Each resident’s room was personalised with their own belongings, and families were encouraged to bring items that were important to residents.

Residents told inspectors how positive the care home team were, and how everyone felt it was a caring culture within the home. One resident said: "[The team] are lovely. [They] come and sit and talk to you. There are lots of positives here". Residents were encouraged to spend their time as they wished, with one resident telling inspectors: "They encourage me to do as much as I am able for myself. They know it's my choice to do things for myself even if this means my room gets messy."

CQC inspectors noted that the lifestyle team provided a wide range of activities for residents that were varied and person-centred. The team ensured residents were encouraged to participate in both group and one-to-one activities, including time with the local community, such as taking part in an intergenerational initiative, the Archie Project, with local school children, and also knitting hats for babies at the local maternity unit.

Inspectors were particularly impressed with the positive innovations that the home manager had implemented. Relatives of a resident said: “The new manager has been lovely, always speaks, very energetic, friendly, a happy man, any problems I can knock on his door anytime."

Razvan Stanbeca, home manager at Colne View, said: “The team at Colne View have worked tirelessly to ensure we offer a true home-from-home to all the residents and their families, and everyone is really proud of their achievements.

“The CQC praised our efforts, commenting that residents have maximum choice and control of their lives, which is really important for us to ensure that all residents can retain as much independence as possible, and live a happy and fulfilled life. It was great to see positive comments on the varied range of activities on offer.

“Receiving a ‘good’ rating shows just how dedicated the team is to looking after every individual’s needs, and we will continue our hard work to ensure residents receive compassionate, person-centred care. I would like to say thank you to the team for their dedication, which I know is also greatly appreciated by residents and their families.”
