The team at Care UK’s Colne View, on Dame Mary Walk, organised a special presentation ceremony to award the badge to 89-year-old resident Roy Hopkins, as a thank you for serving his country over 65 years ago.
Roy served in the RAF from 1948-1954 as a clerk for the medical corps. He was based at Hereford School of Admin, and looked after the Polish and Czechoslovakian air force to make sure they were fit to serve.
With help from Roy’s son, Lyndon, the team arranged a presentation ceremony at the home to celebrate his wartime achievements. Roy was presented the badge by special guests Dafydd Thomas, from Brize Norton, and Sergeant Toni Corrigan, from RAF Honnington. Live entertainment from the Swingtime Sweethearts, who sang a selection of 1940s and 1950s hits, was also enjoyed by Roy’s family and friends.
Razvan Stanbeca, home manager at Colne View, said: “Since we first met Roy, he often recalled his time serving in the armed forces.
“When Roy found out his service had been recognised with the RAF Veterans’ Badge, he was over the moon, and we were lucky enough to be able to celebrate his badge presentation with him.
