Eagle-eyed Kenilworth Grange residents enjoy birdwatch weekend

Residents at Kenilworth Grange took part in the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success! 

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch saw residents at Kenilworth Grange well prepared, with bird feeders filled and binoculars in hand. 

During the weekend, residents took part in a variety of activities related to our feathered friends, including a special trip to Birdland, in Bourton on the Water. Residents had a wonderful day meeting a variety of exotic birds, including getting up close with flamingos and penguins.

The team and residents also ventured out to local park Abbey Fields, to watch local birds living around the park’s large lake. Getting creative back at Kenilworth Grange, and inspired from their trips, everyone spent time painting colourful birds. 

2019 marks the 40th anniversary of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which encourages people nationwide to count the birds in their gardens to allow the charity to monitor trends and understand how different species are doing. Data from over half a million people is then compared year-on-year to provide a ‘snapshot’ of bird numbers across the UK.  

Home manager at Kenilworth Grange, Sheridan Farish, said: “The birdwatch is always an incredibly popular activity with residents, and this year we wanted to make the weekend better than ever. Everyone especially enjoyed the trip to Birdland – the penguins were a real highlight! 

“Birdwatching gives older people a fantastic opportunity to get outdoors and be more active – but even better, no matter what your mobility level you can take part. This wonderfully inclusive hobby can also be easily enjoyed from the comfort of your lounge, watching birds in the garden, or traveling further afield to visit some of our more exotic feathered friends. We all had a fantastic time and will continue our hobby over the coming months.”
