‘Outstanding’ – National watchdog rate Amberley Lodge

A national care watchdog has awarded a care home in Purley ‘outstanding’, with relatives and residents praising its exceptionally attentive and friendly team members. 

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report awarded Amberley Lodge ‘outstanding’ in its level of care, having a well-led service, and its responsiveness, resulting in an overall ‘outstanding’ rating.

Inspectors commented on how exceptionally caring the team at Amberley Lodge are, and how they ensured that care was provided in a meaningful and relaxed way.

During the inspection, the relatives of the residents told inspectors about how impressed they were with the care from the team and how it felt individual to each resident. One relative said: "[The team] are wonderful! Nothing is too much trouble”.

In the report it was noted that the home manager set up a 'wish tree' on each floor of the home to encourage residents to write down their wishes for the team to grant as many wishes as possible. Wishes granted so far have included one resident seeing Beyonce in concert, and a Chinese-themed evening for a resident who wished to experience a visit to China. Commenting on the activities at the home, one resident said: “There is always something going on and I like it so I come to it."

It was highlighted how the team demonstrate a real empathy for residents, especially those living with dementia. One relative said: “I have visited many dementia nursing homes in my career and I can truly say Amberley Lodge is one of the best for all aspects of dementia care I have seen." 

The team at the home were recognised for their outstanding end of life care, and their understanding of residents’ and family’s needs during this time. One relative commented; "[My family member] finally received the care everyone deserves at the end of their lives. That would not be possible without the care and expertise of such dedicated staff. We are truly grateful." 

Inspectors were impressed with the variety of activities on offer at Amberley Lodge, from exercises, cookery and pet therapy to parties and theme nights. The home holds a weekly ‘fruit market’ where stalls are recreated for people to chat with friends and choose their own fruit. Residents have access to Wi-Fi and are encouraged to freely use the internet and keep in touch with loved ones via video call.
