Residents at a care home in Newbury celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!
This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch inspired activities took place over the weekend and residents at Care UK’s Winchcombe Place, on Maple Crescent, celebrated the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.
As part of the celebrations, residents were joined by Berkshire Birds of Prey where our feathered friends, including a barn owl and a hawk.
Residents enjoyed getting up close with the impressive creatures and took part in a ‘show and tell’ to learn more about the birds.
Kerry Thompson, home manager at Winchcombe Place, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Winchcombe Place, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event. Our feathered friends from the Berkshire Birds of Prey were wonderful to see up close and created wonderful discussions about British wildlife.
“Connecting with nature can be extremely important for older people, and promotes positive social interaction, improves wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation. This can be incredibly beneficial for those living with dementia, as it can conjure happy memories and the associated emotions.
“I’d like to say thank you to Berkshire Birds of Prey for joining us and making the day so special.”
Winchcombe Place is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia and short-term respite care.
