Silent disco fever spreads through Sandfields

Sandfields gave residents the chance to dance with its first-ever silent disco.

Residents took part in the sensory experience which involves dancing to music listened to on wireless headphones.

After seeing the success of silent discos with care home residents in Australia, the team at Sandfields decided to hold their own, organised and ran by fitness coach Mark Sweeting.

The combination of dance with music has proved to have a number of therapeutic benefits, in particular for residents living with dementia. Residents were able to recall memories and emotions from earlier years, while improving fitness and balance through dance.

Deputy home manager at Sandfields, Malaika Browne, said: “Here at Sandfields activity-based care is at the core of what we do. The idea to hold a silent disco came from looking at how we could involve residents in a fun, innovative activity.
“It was amazing to see how engaged the residents were with the silent disco. Once the music started playing, everyone started to tap their feet, move their hands and have fun. We are really looking forward to holding another disco soon!”
