Cedrus House pays tribute to veterans with art project

Cedrus House welcomed local people to the home to showcase a handmade art installation to mark the centenary of the First World War armistice.

In the weeks leading up to the event, residents, team members and families knitted and crocheted poppies which have been made into a Tower of London-style waterfall, adorning the care home’s balcony. 

The garden itself has been filled with clay poppies which were handmade by residents and dedicated to loved ones. The care team also created a tribute wall in the home’s coffee shop, which featured displays of photographs and memorabilia. 

Residents and visitors to the home also enjoyed performances of nostalgic WWI songs from local artist, Diane Thompson, as well as a rousing recital from Castleton Brass Band. 

Michelle Webster, home manager at Cedrus House, said: “Art has become a much-loved activity by everyone at Cedrus House, so what better way to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War than with a poignant installation here at the home. 

“We were delighted that so many residents, family members and friends came together to craft our wonderful waterfall and garden display – we think they look fantastic and are the perfect tribute to fallen heroes. 

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for the weekend, especially Diane Thompson and Castleton Brass Band for their fantastic performances. The installation will remain on display until Tuesday 20th November and we wouldlove for local people to pop in and see it for themselves.”
