Themed rooms in a care home? It’s elementary, dear Watson

Glastonbury Court has recently converted some of its rooms into fun, themed spaces for residents.

The team at the home on worked together with residents and their families to create two quirky rooms, giving them a novel space to catch-up.

The first room has been transformed into a Sherlock Holmes’ lounge, complete with the detective’s iconic cape, hat and pipe. Residents are able to take a step back in time when entering this room and the team at Glastonbury Court hope to make the area more interactive through mystery solving games in the future.

Dotty’s, the care home’s brand-new shop, also recently opened its doors. The shop’s name was chosen through a dot voting process where residents, their families and friends, as well as the home team, put a dot next to the name they liked most – and ironically Dotty’s came out on top. The shop gives residents independence as they are able to shop for anything they need, from toiletries to treats.

The care team has also created a special area for families to be together, in a calm environment when the time is needed. The space has been named The Sunset Suite.

Glastonbury Court is now working on additional projects including a train station waiting room which will incorporate a trip from London to Shanghai. The team also plans to convert one of the suites into a street in Bury where residents’ doors will be painted in the colours they remember their own doors being in from their younger years.

Sharlene Van Tonder, home manager at Glastonbury Court, said: “The new themed areas are wonderful additions to the care home. It’s great that we had the resident’s input in creating these spaces as it was vital that they would be areas for everyone to enjoy.

“We had a lot of fun coming up with and executing the concepts, and feedback so far has been brilliant. The new rooms provide wonderful reminiscence opportunities and are a great way to spark conversation.

“We are looking forward to completing additional projects in the future as these interactive spaces will make the home even more special for the residents.”
