The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Kingsleigh an overall ‘good’ rating, following an unannounced inspection.
The care home was rated ‘good’ in all five categories for safety, effectiveness, caring, being well-led, and being responsive.
The report praised the home for providing residents with plenty of opportunities to participate in meaningful and enjoyable activities.
Books of conversation starters were available on the tables in the communal lounge which created opportunities for the team to learn about residents’ former lives and current interests. This initiative led to the discovery of one resident’s personal history of working with make-up, and the lifestyle co-ordinators at Kingsleigh are now planning to host a make-up masterclass.
The team had recently hosted a 1960s themed evening and a football themed night, both of which proved to be a huge success. One resident commented: “We have had some good entertainers in”, with a relative of a resident saying: “There is always something going on; music, quizzes, things like that. [The resident] gets involved with whatever is going on. They encourage people to be involved in things.”
Many people interviewed by the CQC inspectors commented on how Kingsleigh felt like a ‘home-from-home’, with a resident’s relative remarking: “This is very much [the resident’s] home and I feel very welcome visiting”. The team was praised for being kind, caring and supportive, with a resident saying: “I love it here. I am so happy with them [referring to the team]”.
The Kingsleigh team was praised for their affection with people, with hand holding and hugs being given naturally. A visiting relative told inspectors: “I can't tell you how impressed I am. Everyone is so kind to [the resident]. [The resident] is being cared for very well.” The minutes from a recent residents’ meeting recorded people saying one of the best things about the home was: “We enjoy getting cuddles from staff as it makes us feel loved and wanted.”
