Abney Court celebrates Care Home Open Day with Olympic medallist

There was fun for all at Abney Court when it invited the local community in for a day of celebrations, with help from Olympic medallist, James Goddard.

The team at Abney Court welcomed the people of Cheadle to enjoy Care Home Open Day, a countrywide initiative set up to develop lasting relationships between care homes and local communities, and to dispel common myths about care home life.

The team marked the occasion by throwing a Commonwealth-themed party. Olympic medallist, James Goddard, was on hand to greet guests as they arrived for the celebrations, and took along his medals to show to residents and visitors. There was live entertainment throughout the afternoon from the Michael Cretu Duo, and guests enjoyed a variety of delicious dishes inspired by countries from around the Commonwealth, which had been freshly prepared by the home’s in-house chef.

Guests were also able to treat themselves to a pamper session from nearby Nuffield Health, which joined in with the celebrations and offered beauty treatments and a fitness class.

Tracy Mitchell, home manager at Abney Court, said: “We had a fantastic afternoon marking Care Home Open Day at Abney Court. The residents all really enjoyed celebrating cultures from around the Commonwealth and meeting James Goddard. Many of our residents have enjoyed swimming during their lives, so it was great to hear them sharing their stories with James.

“Care Home Open Day is all about building bridges with our local community, and showing what life in a care home is really like, and so it was fantastic that so many of our neighbours came along to celebrate. We would like to say a big thank you James Goddard and Nuffield Health, as well as the people of Cheadle, for making the day so special.”
