Time to rhyme for World Poetry Day at Field Lodge

Field Lodge are inviting the local community to join residents in celebrating World Poetry Day on Wednesday 21st March.

World Poetry Day is an annual celebration of rhythmic literature and promotes the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world. This year, the team at Field Lodge will open its doors from 11am – 4pm for a day of word play and rhyming fun.

Residents at Field Lodge care home will be celebrating the day by reading a number of their favourite poems and rhymes aloud. In preparation for the event, drama students from St Ivo School have been invited along to share some of their poetry.

Residents are also being encouraged to put pen to paper to create their own short verses and poems to enter into Care UK’s poetry competition, which is taking place nationwide to mark World Poetry Day.

Customer relations manager, Julie May, explained why Field Lodge care home is taking part in World Poetry Day: “Many residents will have fond memories of the poems they read in their younger years and it can be incredibly valuable to tap into those memories.

“Sharing poetry is a simple activity that has many therapeutic benefits, even for those that may struggle to communicate, simply listening to a poem can help reduce the feeling of isolation, alleviate boredom and ease anxiety.

“Poetry can also bridges the gap between different generations and be enjoyed by all, whether you’re reading a popular classic or writing your own verse. We hope that the people of St Ives will join us in sharing poetry with their loved ones.”
