Time to rhyme for World Poetry Day at Ambleside

Ambleside is preparing to celebrate World Poetry Day on Wednesday 21st March.

Residents at Ambleside have got their poetry books at the ready and are looking forward to taking part in a poetry-filled day.

World Poetry Day is an annual celebration of rhythmic literature and promotes the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.

Residents at Ambleside will be writing autobiographical poems, taking part in a poetry quiz and will create an Ambleside poem, focusing on what life is like at the care home, alongside the team and their relatives, who will join them on the day. The day will be topped off by a dementia-friendly performance of the Orchestra of the Swan, a local award-winning orchestra .

Residents are also being encouraged to put pen to paper to create their own short verses and poems to enter into Care UK’s poetry competition, which is taking place nationwide to mark World Poetry Day.

Home manager, Clare Mudge explained why Ambleside care home is taking part in World Poetry Day: “Poetry is a powerful tool that can aid expression, communication and emotional resilience. It is also incredibly evocative and can bring back memories and emotions for older and young people alike.

“World Poetry Day presents a great opportunity to share poems from past and present with residents and the wider community. It also fits in really well with our ‘activity based care’ approach here at Ambleside and has real therapeutic benefits for residents whether writing or reading, especially those living with dementia.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating this event with a day full of rhyme with our residents’ relatives.”
