Colne View residents joined by school children to celebrate poetry

It was time to rhyme at Colne View when it opened its doors to the community and local pupils to celebrate World Poetry Day.

Residents spent the day reading, writing and sharing some of their favourite poems to mark the event.

The team also invited Year 6 pupils from Richard de Clare Primary School to join the celebrations. The children have been learning about life in Britain during the Second World War and decided to use their new-found knowledge to write their own WWII-inspired poems, which they shared with the residents.

The children later presented their handmade book of WWII poems to the residents which is now available in the home for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Customer relations manager, Kim Richardson, said: “Our World Poetry Day celebration is a great example of how activity based care at Colne View supports residents to continue enjoying their passions and hobbies. It is remarkable to see how reading poetry aloud can really bring people together and put a smile on the faces of everyone around.

“For older people living with dementia, somebody reading aloud to them – whether it be a poem or short story – can have many therapeutic benefits due to its calming nature. We had a wonderful time celebrating all things poetry with the local community. We would like to say a big thank you to the pupils from Richard de Clare Primary School for making the day extra special – the residents enjoyed sharing their own stories of WWII and listening to the brilliant poems the children had produced.”
