A couple at Foxbridge House have shared their pearls of wisdom in celebration of the royal platinum wedding anniversary.
Bill and Joan Miles, aged 88 and 84, have been featured in a commemorative video in which they talk about their own love story, to mark the Queen and Prince Phillip’s marriage milestone.
The Orpington couple have been married for 64 years. Bill recalls how they met, commenting that: “We spent a wonderful holiday together and our friendship grew stronger. I had to return home to work for the Metropolitan Police, so our holiday was sadly cut short.
“On returning to work, I knew I couldn’t leave Joan without saying a proper goodbye. I took another few days leave and travelled back to the Isle of Weight so I could find Joan and tell her how I felt. I searched every hotel for three days – and on the third day I found her! It was love at first sight!’
Created by Care UK, the video includes residents from care homes across the country reminiscing about loved ones. From sharing their first dates, to the moment they walked down the aisle, the selection of memories and stories have been captured to celebrate companionship and the some of the country’s great love stories.
Carol McCormack, home manager at Foxbridge House, said: “We were delighted when Bill and Joan were asked to feature in this commemorative video as they, along with many residents here at the home, often speak fondly about how they met their other halves, their wedding day and their children – and it’s always so lovely to hear.
“We regularly celebrate big anniversaries here at Foxbridge House and understand the importance of maintaining relationships and celebrating life’s milestones.”
Residents and the team at Foxbridge House also celebrated the royal wedding anniversary with a tea party and a screening of the royal occasion in 1947.
Carol concluded: “Celebrating the occasion has been a really valuable reminiscence activity for residents – particularly those living with dementia. It’s been great for residents to share their life experiences and memories of their loved ones.”
