Appleby House residents help unveil new art installation

Residents from Appleby House were joined by the Mayor for the unveiling of an intergenerational community art project.

Residents from Appleby House attended a special ceremony to unveil the artwork they helped to create. They were joined by special guests, Epsom and Ewell Mayor, Councillor Liz Frost, and a representative from Community Foundation for Surrey, Rebecca Clay.

Appleby House was one of three care homes in the area that worked with Ali Waters, Outreach project Manager from MGS04, a local art charity. Residents were joined by pupils from a number of local schools who also took part in the regular art sessions.

The residents and students were led by local artist, Asta Kalpokaite Golias, who encouraged them to work together to create their own artwork using clay. These individual sculptures have been brought together to form a wider installation in Epsom Town Square.

The sculpture, Washed Off Memories, has been sponsored by Pariter Trust and Appleby House, and is currently on display at Epsom Square, for the whole community to enjoy.

Home manager at Appleby House, Shona Bradbury, said: “We were delighted to be able to attend the official unveiling of the sculpture at Epsom Square and the residents were thrilled to see their work on display in the local community.

“Art has become a much loved activity by everyone at Appleby House, and the residents had a wonderful time working with the students to create their own creations. Each small sculpture represents a resident’s individual memory, and it’s brilliant to see how they have all come together to create one work of art.”

Asta added: “It’s been fantastic working with the residents at Appleby House and a delight to bring them together with local pupils. We strongly believe that when children and older people meet, no creative teaching needed, and that’s certainly been the case with our most recent project.”
