Residents at The Potteries count feathered friends

The Potteries had its binoculars at the ready when it took part in this year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch.

Residents from The Potteries, had a busy weekend observing the many feathered friends visiting the garden as they took part in the world’s largest wildlife survey.

The Potteries residents prepared for the birdwatch by creating a number of tasty treats to attract birds to the care home’s garden.

Home manager, Zita Turner, explained why The Potteries is one of several Care UK care homes that took part in this year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. “We were delighted to take part in this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch and after making a number of treats to tempt the local birds, it’s safe to say that all of the residents enjoyed our weekend of wildlife spotting.

“Spending time outdoors is important for physical and mental wellbeing, and has many benefits for older people, particularly for those who are living with dementia. The sounds of bird song and the appearance of different species can help bring memories to the surface and act as a valuable reminiscence activity. Despite the wet weather, everyone had lots of fun over the weekend and it was a great opportunity to spend time outside in the garden.”
