Couple renew wedding vows at Bowes House

A local couple has renewed their wedding vows at a Hailsham care home after 48 years of marriage.

A resident at Care UK’s Bowes House, Stuart Grove, aged 83, and his wife Margaret, aged 77, renewed their wedding vows at a special celebration at the care home on Battle Road.

The happy couple, who married in 1968 and moved to Hailsham the same year, were joined by friends and family, as well as residents and the care team for the occasion.

Home manager at Bowes House, Helena Barrow, said: “Stuart and Margaret are such a lovely couple and we were all honoured to witness the renewal of their wedding vows. At Bowes House, we understand the importance of special family occasions, which can enhance residents’ wellbeing and happiness, and overall quality of life. It was wonderful to host this special day, and the residents and visitors all enjoyed celebrating with the happy couple.”

The couple met at a church youth club in 1950 and were married at St Saviours Church on 26th October 1968.

Stuart and Margaret have two daughters; Geraldine and Jacqueline, and three grandchildren; Sam, Bretema and Coral. Stuart was originally from Morden, Surrey, where he grew up as one of nine children. Stuart moved to Bowes House in March 2016. Margaret was born in India and moved back to the UK in 1949, she is one of four children.

Stuart worked as a foreman, at a sheet metal factory in Eastbourne, until he retired in 1999. His hobby in his younger years was looking after budgies where he entered lots of competitions with the Budgerigar Society and had a prize-winning budgie.

Bowes House is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short term respite care.  Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema and hairdressers, and there is plenty of space both in and outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
