Newbury care home helps local school garden bloom

A local primary school is saying thank you to a care home in Newbury after it donated £200 to enhance the school’s garden.

Winchcome Place care home on Maple Crescent made the donation to Winchcome School to build new planting beds. The donation paid for tyres to be transformed into planters, adding a colourful addition to the garden and promoting the message of recycling to the young pupils.

Irene Bridle and Arthur Firth, residents at the home and both keen gardeners, visited the school to help plant bulbs with the students.

Amanda Speck, customer relations manager at Winchcombe Place, said: “It was really lovely to see Irene, Arthur and the students working together on the new planters. Gardening is something that can be enjoyed by everyone, irrespective of age, so it was great to see different generations coming together to make the school garden more beautiful.

“We are always looking to grow our relationships with the local community, and as Winchcombe School neighbours the home, it was the obvious choice.

“For many of our residents, gardening would have been a daily activity with most taking great pride in the presentation of their garden, so it was nice to be able to give the residents the opportunity to use their green fingers.”

Angela Hay, head teacher at Winchcombe School, added: “The new planters will provide our pupils with a more cheerful environment they can enjoy during the school day. The children will be actively learning about the life cycle of plants and what happens throughout the seasons. Thank you to Care UK for their generous donation.”
