St Ives care home goes for gold in 24 hour cycle challenge

A local care home has taken inspiration from the Olympic velodrome with a 24 hour cycle challenge, all in the name of charity.

Following team GB’s success in Rio, residents, family and the care team at Field Lodge care home got on their bike for a day long static cycle challenge. The day raised over £250 for local charity, Ladybird Boat Trust.

Founded in 2013, the trust offers free boat rides to enable members of the public to enjoy the scenery and wildlife on the river in comfort. The trust is run by unpaid volunteers and relies heavily on donations from the public to continue providing the service to the local community.

Lisa Houghton, home manager at Field Lodge, said: “Keeping active is important to us here at Field Lodge and so we wanted to incorporate our fitness values – and the spirit of the Olympic games - into a fun activity, whilst raising money for a deserving charity.

“The Ladybird Boat Trust is important to our residents as it gives them the opportunity to get out on the water and explore the wonderful countryside that surrounds us here at Field Lodge. Without donations from the public the trust would simply have to cease, so we really want to encourage the local community to support us on our cycle challenge.”

Situated on London Road, St Ives, in Cambridge, Field Lodge is a modern purpose-built care home providing full-time residential, nursing, and dementia care, as well as respite care and compassionate end-of-life care.  Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has a choice of lounges and dining rooms along with facilities such as an activity room, therapy room and a hairdressing salon.
