Trip for the taste buds at Bowes House care home

The Care UK team and residents at Bowes House in Hailsham have been on a virtual cruise of the Mediterranean, ‘docking’ in a different country each day and soaking up different region’s traditional flavours and famous dishes.

The residents at the care home on Battle Road were treated to a week of lunchtime feasts created by head chef Marc Beckett. First stop was France, where residents enjoyed Beef Bourguignonne, while a trip down the coast saw residents sampling the tastes of Portugal with Piri Piri Chicken.

For the mid-week stop in Spain, residents tried delicious Tortilla Espanola, while Thursday’s menu embraced all the flavours of Turkey with Lamb Kofta Kebabs.

For the final leg of the cruise, residents sampled Italian grilled fish with bacon, bean and broccoli ragout and for the last day of the trip, residents visited Greece for traditional baked Lamb Moussaka. Back on dry land in England everyone was treated to a ‘welcome back’ traditional roast dinner of beef and Yorkshire Puddings.

Themed decorations helped residents embrace their virtual trip throughout the week and a host of different activities kept everyone entertained while ‘on board’. Each day, there was also a special ‘Captain’s Cocktail’ to keep hydration levels up.

Bowes House home manager, Helena Barrow, said: “Here at Bowes House we understand the importance of providing tasty, nutritious and well-balanced menus for older people. We take into consideration every aspect of the dining experience to ensure it is enjoyable, sociable and fun for residents and importantly, that they maintain their independence and love of food.

“By hosting a virtual cruise, residents had the opportunity to try a whole host of tasty, freshly-made dishes from around the Mediterranean. The head chef Marc did a brilliant job creating a creative and delicious menu, and the tastes and flavours of each of the dishes helped us all to imagine we were traveling to different countries and sampling their traditional cuisine.”
