High Wycombe care home wins seal of approval from national care watchdog and five “good” in CQC rati

Care UK’s Catherine Court care home in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire has been given the seal of approval by a national care watchdog. At a visit by the Care Quality Commission in March, examining the home against a number of key areas such as safe, effective, caring, responsive, well-led, inspectors were happy to award the home an overall good rating.

During their visit to the home, which provides specialist care for older people, some of whom have dementia, the inspectors talked informally to the team and examined the home’s administrative systems and processes.

Home Manager Temby Nyemba said: “I am delighted that we reached the high standard set out by the Government and CQC and I was even more delighted that the inspectors highlighted how the team works to respect people's dignity and independence.”

People and relatives told the inspectors that they felt staff were kind and caring. Comments included "The care is very good. I can't fault it", "They seem very happy here. The staff are very nice and friendly", "We chose Catherine Court to care for our relative and it was definitely the right decision to make. From the first day they have been marvellous." One relative told us "I can't fault the staff's caring attitude. It's taken a weight off our minds and we know our relative is safe and cared for."

The inspectors also observed positive interactions between staff and people who lived at the service. Staff were aware of how to promote people's dignity and privacy by ensuring people were treated with kindness and respect. Staff were attentive to people's needs and recognised when people needed assistance or reassurance, for example, asking people if they were happy and if they needed anything.

Temby said: “Everyone at Catherine Court, including the domestic, kitchen and maintenance teams, strives to ensure that we create genuinely individual care for each resident. To do that, we ensure we get to know each person, their history and their interests, so that we can tailor each care plan to maintain their independence, life skills and sense of wellbeing.”
