That’s what happened on 14th April when Kitty Shackleton, a resident at Oak House in Slough, celebrated her 104th birthday.
Kitty had spent the morning being pampered, having her hair and nails done so she was looking her best for Elvis as the afternoon party kicked off. It wasn’t long before Elvis was serenading her with his greatest hits and she was singing along and having a dance.
Oak House residents and staff, and other friends of Kitty came along to celebrate her big day with her. Kitty was also joined by Susan Robinson, one of her three daughters, as well as Susan’s daughter and grandchildren – Kitty’s great-grandchildren.
Kitty had chosen her cake and party food well in advance, and was sure about her choice of entertainment – she told Rachael Cresdee, the activity coordinator at the home, “I love Elvis.”
Rachael says, “We wanted to throw a party for Kitty because it’s not every day you celebrate such an important birthday. On the day, we laid a nice table for her with flowers that matched her cake and we had non-alcoholic wine for her (she doesn’t drink) plus Bucks Fizz. Everyone had a fantastic time – Kitty most of all.”
Julie Bignell, the home manager at Oak House says, “Kitty tells us that she was very active when she was younger, running a lot and playing tennis. She says her parents always encouraged her to eat healthily too – the two together seem to be Kitty’s secret to reaching a good age.”
