100th birthday celebrations at Perry Manor care home

Birthday celebrations were in full swing at Perry Manor care home in Worcester when resident Arthur Edward Dean celebrated his 100th birthday.

Arthur, known as Edward, turned 100 years ‘young’ on 19th December and was joined by family, friends and residents for a party hosted by the team at Perry Manor on Charles Hastings Way.

Highlights throughout the day included a personal birthday card from The Queen and a cake which had been specially baked by his daughter.

Adding to the celebrations, the Woodgreen Church Choir also visited the care home to sing traditional Christmas carols and finished their performance by singing happy birthday to Edward.

Pushpa Sagoo, home manager at Perry Manor, said: “Residents are at the heart of everything we do here at Perry Manor, and we always take the time to commemorate birthdays and anniversaries. In particular, we think it is important to involve friends and loved ones in such important events and to keep to any traditions residents may have around special days. Everyone had a fun time joining in the celebrations, Edward had a really wonderful 100th birthday.”

Edward was born in Walsall on 19th December 1915. During the Second World War, he was in the army as part of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and was also involved in bomb disposal.

Following the war, Edward joined the family printing business, Deanson Ltd, in Walsall and went on to start another business, Castle Packaging, where he continued as director until he retired at the age of 65.

In 1948, Edward married Frances and they had two children, Stephen and Alexandra. He now has four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In 1958 he married for the second time to Eileen and lived in Sutton Coldfield until he was widowed in 1994. In 2004, Edward moved into sheltered accommodation in Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield where he lived until in March 2015.

He was very active in his younger years and took part in a whole host of hobbies including hockey, golf, walking and gardening. He also enjoyed sailing in a dinghy in Bala, Wales, and he owned a yacht which he sailed in Barmouth, Wales.
