From 11am until 12.30pm, dementia specialist Andrew Potts will share his knowledge and provide practical tips for those caring for someone living with dementia. Andrew will help people understand the condition, learn how memories are lost, and give guidance on how to overcome communication barriers.
After the event, Andrew will be on hand to answer any questions and there will be an opportunity for members of the public to meet the carers at Winchcombe Place and take a look around the home.
Customer relations manager, Amanda Speck, said: “Research undertaken by Care UK has highlighted the challenges faced by family carers across the UK, with only 14 per cent of people in the south east believing they would be able to cope if a parent or close relative was diagnosed with dementia. What’s more, almost half of all respondents in the region were unaware of the support available should they find themselves caring for someone with the condition.
“At Winchcombe Place, we want to open-up access to free advice for family carers in Newbury and beyond, and the understanding dementia event is aimed at helping people to boost their knowledge and to get a clearer idea of how best to cope with everyday scenarios. We are looking forward to opening our doors for what promises to be an insightful event for the local community.”
Those who attend the understanding dementia event at Winchcombe Place will also be able to pick up a copy of Care UK’s Good to Go. The free guide highlights how important it is for those living with dementia – and their carers – to get out and about, and the emotional and physical benefits of staying active.
