Celebrating the best of British at Cleves Place

Residents and the care teams at Care UK’s Cleves Place care home in Haverhill, Suffolk, have been getting creative – and just a little competitive – as part of National Sandwich Week (10-16th May).

Andrew Mussett, one of three chefs supporting Care UK’s Suffolk homes, laid down the challenge to all four of the suites to create a sandwich that celebrated the best of British flavours.

Carers worked with residents to get ideas for fillings, and then had to produce their creation to a strict budget and within a tight timeframe, ready for four judges from the care team to score them on presentation, freshness, ingredients and taste.

The care team and residents in Pearl suitewere the winners with their salmon, cream cheese and chive filling, and were very happy to receive two bottles of bubbles for their efforts. However, Opal and Ruby suites, and the day club members, also won categories.

Best comfort food sandwich went to turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce, for all its associations with Christmas. Best presented sandwich went to beef and mayonnaise on brown bread with a banana and honey ‘dessert’ sandwich on white bread, which was served with a cup of tea. The oddest combination, dubbed the ‘man sandwich’ went to a fusion of grated and cream cheese, smoked salmon, sweet chutney, tomato, lettuce and cucumber.

Everyone in the home will get to sample the winning salmon filling for themselves when the residents and team at Cleves Place hold their indoor Poppy Picnic as part of National Picnic Week on Sunday 21st June.

“The sandwich competition was a bit of fun but it was a great way to get the residents involved, to get the teams in the different suites bonding and there’s no harm in some healthy competition,” says Andrew Mussett.

“The salmon filling was a delicious and classic British combination. We’re looking forward to giving all the Cleves Place residents and teams the chance to sample it for themselves when we have our Poppy Picnic, which will be in aid of another great British institution – the Royal British Legion.”
