People in Newbury invited to have a hoot at Winchcombe Place

People in Newbury are invited to join in the fun when Fir Tree Falconry drops into Care UK’s Winchcombe Place care home on Maple Crescent on Thursday 16 April from 2-5pm, with an array of feathered friends.

Following the recent success of the care home’s participation in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, the team at Winchcombe Place is hosting a free community event, with residents, their families and visiting members of the public having the rare opportunity to get up close to many different birds of prey, including kestrels and owls.

The Mayor of Newbury, Jo Day, will be paying a visit to present a bird table to the winners of a bird-themed colouring competition: Winchcombe School. Entries were judged by a seven-strong panel of Winchcombe Place residents and the winning entry which secured first prize for the school was completed by Husain Misbah Hameed, aged five. Husain Misbah Hameed will be presented with a family ticket for a falconry experience, courtesy of Fir Tree Falconry, while runner-up, Tristan Wallace, aged six from Robert Sandilands Primary School, will be attending the event as a VIP guest.

Sacha Liddiard, customer relations manager at Winchcombe Place, said: “So many residents here have an active interest in wildlife and nature, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch earlier this year, so we have invited Fir Tree Falconry to bring along birds from their impressive private collection and to lead a fun event.

“We hope the local community will join us for what promises to be an exciting and awe-inspiring afternoon and we are looking forward to once again welcoming the Mayor of Newbury and pupils from the Winchcombe School and Robert Sandilands Primary School along to Winchcombe Place.

“Everyone involved had a great time judging the colouring competition and we are all now gearing up to present the winners with their well-deserved prizes. Our highly democratic panel of seven residents felt Misbah’s entry was a standout winner due to the vibrant colours he used, while Tristan was a worthy runner-up as his entry was extremely neat.”

Situated on Maple Crescent in Newbury, Winchcombe Place is one of Care UK’s newest homes. It provides a range of services from residential and specialist dementia care, to short term respite and sensitive end of life care. Visitors to the falconry event can take the opportunity to meet members of the Winchcombe Place team, while also having a closer look at the care home.
