Members of the local community are invited to drop in and make the most of the help and advice on offer. From 11am, carers, families and people living with dementia can visit Priors House and get support and practical tips on day-to-day living – whether in their own homes or in a care home.
Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be available after the event, as well as the opportunity to take a tour of the home and meet members of the team.
The free support group will be headed-up by Priors House dementia lead, Marie Lavery, along with representatives from the Alzheimer’s Society. The group will meet on the last Friday of every month following the initial meeting in April, with speakers and experts joining future meetings to offer additional support.
Speaking about the dementia café, Marie said: “With dementia affecting 820,000 people in the UK and 25 million people having a close friend or family member living with dementia, there is a real and pressing need to provide easy access to professional support and information, as well as ensure there are places that people can go where they can share individual experiences.
“In my role as dementia lead, I am passionate about establishing a much-needed support group for people in Leamington Spa, who are living with dementia or caring for loved ones. I am looking forward to establishing the group here at Priors House as a friendly and welcoming forum where people can drop in on a regular basis, or just attend as and when they feel the need to.”
Visitors to Priors House can also collect a copy of Care UK’s ‘Listen, Talk, Connect’ guide. Compiled by professional carers, families affected by dementia, and specialists in the field, it gives helpful tips and advice on how to overcome challenges with conversations and general interactions with those living with dementia.
Situated on Old Milverton Lane, Priors House is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the home has a cinema, hairdressers and plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation.
