100th Birthday Celebrations at Scarlet House Care Home

Birthday celebrations were in full swing last week at Care UK’s Scarlet House care home in Stroud where the most senior resident celebrated her 100th birthday.

Vera Camp turned 100 years “young” on Wednesday 14th January. Twelve family members joined the team at Scarlet House for a special birthday lunch in Vera’s honour complete with the all-important cake, made by the home’s very own kitchen staff.

There were many other highlights throughout the day, including a personal birthday card from the Queen.

Pyela Mwale, Home Manager at Scarlet House, said: “The residents are at the heart of everything we do at Scarlet House, so it was fantastic day for all celebrating Vera’s 100th birthday. We always take the time to celebrate special days like birthdays and anniversaries and like to make all residents feel at home by keeping to any traditions they may have such as seeing their friends and family.”

Vera was born on 14th January 1915 in Haresfield, Gloucestershire but moved to Hertfordshire as a young adult to become a companion to a farmer’s wife where she learned her trade looking after poultry on the farm. Vera also met her husband Alfred in Hertfordshire and they married in November 1940 at Haresfield Church. Together Vera and Alfred took over his parent’s farm near Ardley, Hertfordshire.

After farming for nearly 50 years, Vera and Alfred decided to retire and move back to Gloucestershire, celebrating their Golden wedding anniversary. Vera was diagnosed with Dementia in 2012 after several falls and moved into Scarlet House in December.

Situated in Ebley, Scarlet House is a state-of-the-art care home designed to deliver the very best standards of care, and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives.  The home offers a range of services including residential care, specialist dementia care and respite care.
