The competition was to bake a festive cake and encourage everyone to get involved, including residents, visitors and staff. Homes that participated in the competition then sent in photographs of the cake and submitted a storybook for judging, highlighting the reasons behind the decorations and how they went about baking their cake. The three categories that the entries were judged on included creativity and festiveness, resident involvement and the presentation of the entry.
The home scored highly in all categories, but particularly with involving the residents. There was a meeting to discuss memories and thoughts of Christmas, and what it meant to each person. This then helped everyone decide how the cake should be decorated. Ideas included the Christmas tree, presents, snow, baby Jesus and holly leaves. As it is the 100th anniversary of the First World War, residents also decided that this should be included on the cake, represented by two poppies. Once the Chef had made a traditional Christmas cake, staff and residents set about making the icing decorations. Whilst some added dye to the icing, others rolled it out and helped make the different pieces to put on the cake.
In addition to the residents being very involved, the entry scored highly on creativity and festiveness. The cake had a Christmas tree as the centrepiece, with snowballs and presents at the base. The wording on the cake read “Merry Christmas” and two poppies made of icing were placed either side. The entry was beautifully presented in a storybook, which included details of what they did, as well as photographs of residents and staff taking part.
