The event, run by director of Dementia Adventure, Neil Mapes gives family carers more of an insight into what dementia is and how it affects their loved ones, as well as practical tips on how to break down communication barriers.
Neil’s ethos is to concentrate on what the person can do, rather than what they can’t.
Everybody enjoyed the event and the feedback received was extremely positive, culminating in home manager, Debbie Douglas showing a large party around the care home.
Doreen Davis, who attended the event sent an email to us the same evening:
I just wanted to thank you for today's seminar.
I really enjoyed it - it was informative without being too heavy. Neil's description of how people with dementia feel was enlightening. I came away with new tools to help me interact with my parents who both have dementia.
Those closest to people living with dementia should be given the opportunity to attend a session such as today's at the time of diagnosis.
Thanks again - after three years trying to support my parents’ dementia I finally feel I understand so much more of what they are feeling.
Attendees were also able to pick up complimentary copies of Care UK’s Listen, Talk, Connect guide, which provides guidance on how to communicate and connect with people living with the condition.
As we are receiving more and more positive feedback like Doreen’s, we are now looking at increasing and adapting these events in the future. For more information on dementia adventure, visit dementiaadventure.co.uk
