Colne View care home has been announced as the winners of Care UK’s Great Christmas Cake Off competition. The Christmas competition, which stretched across all Care UK homes and day centres, asked homes to bake a cake. The competition created some festive fun and also encouraged everyone to get involved in the baking of the cake, form residents to activities coordinators and chefs. Homes that participated in the competition submitted a storybook, highlighting what the home went through to bake a cake. There were three categories that the entries were judged on:
Colne View proved to score full marks in each category and were the worthy winners of the prize. Their cake was split into four sections, each with a different theme, from penguins skiing to a log cabin with fir trees. As well as deciding the theme of the cake, residents chose the shape and size, the ingredients and how to decorate the cake. Residents also took part in a workshop learning how to make sugar paste decorations. These skills were put into practice by residents who decorated miniature penguins, singing choir boys and an eskimo fishing.
In addition to the residents being very involved, the entry scored highly on creativity and festiveness. The entry was beautifully presented in a nice storybook, with photographs of residents decorating the cake, accompanied by examples of the ideas and discussions the residents came up with.
Ana Maria Tudorache, Home Manager at Colne View, reflected on the competition and said:
“I do believe it was a very important task for the residents, who took the competition as a challenge. The residents took this as a serious project and everyone involved looked forward to participating, making it a very exciting time”.
Colne View won a cash prize for winning the competition, which will be used for the resident’s fund.
