Young volunteers put us in bloom

Many of the residents at Catherine Court like to stroll around the garden or watch birds and they were delighted when they heard about a group of young people who had volunteered to revitalise our garden.

Earlier this year, we were joined by Sabrina Kaur for two weeks’ work experience and she had a wonderful time with the residents. Our senior activities coordinator Pauline Delpoio said: “Sabrina approached me about doing some voluntary work soon after she had left us and I was delighted to be able to offer her, and a group of other young volunteers from Action 4 Youth, a gardening project that the residents had suggested.”

Everyone was very impressed with the energy and enthusiasm the group showed – they turned up bright and early to begin the task of turning our garden into an attractive outside space for our residents to enjoy.

After working on the fences, they designed and painted them a colourful display of flowers, trees and birds to act as a focal point, and the bird-feeding garden can be viewed from large windows on both floors, or directly from the decking area, maximising the residents’ viewing opportunities.

Musdasa, who manages our grounds, supervised and joined in with the digging, weeding and heavy work and we have just planted some bulbs to give us flowers through the autumn and winter seasons.

Pauline said: “We were all very grateful to the volunteers and we are looking forward to welcoming them back in 2014.”
