Bloomin’ marvellous

We have won not one but two awards in the recent Godalming in Bloom competition with the help of our residents and some very dedicated and green fingered volunteers.

Over the years we have worked to improve our gardens. The back garden looks well and, with its raised beds, it is a popular place for residents to visit and enjoy a spot of gardening themselves. However, our front garden was not looking so well when multi ‘In Bloom’ award winners Don and Frances Waters offered to get it into shape.

Don and Frances live opposite our home and they are very talented gardeners so we were all thrilled when they volunteered to take on the garden for us.

Manager Gráinne Wokes said: “The garden looks stunning. There are cream, yellow and red roses and there were beautiful lupins and lilies earlier in the season. The judges were very impressed and they awarded the garden a highly commended award, which is very special as it is the competition’s 20th anniversary.”

The residents and their relatives love the garden and often spend time sitting on the benches admiring Mr and Mrs Waters’ hard work.

But, never ones to sit still too long, the residents decided to enter the scarecrow section of the competition themselves and they won their own award.  Gráinne said: “They created a scarecrow nurse using bits of the team’s old uniform and lots of straw for stuffing - it looked fantastic and certainly caught the judges’ eyes.”
