Teapots, flowers and cake help home raise funds for charity

A fun day organised by the residents and team at Care UK’s Stanecroft care home in Dorking will be raising funds to raise awareness of the effects of dementia on Thursday 7th March.

Around 800,000 people in the UK have dementia and the charity Dementia UK seeks to raise awareness of the condition as well as supporting those with it.  The home’s manager Pamela Norman said: “We are a specialist dementia care home and so supporting Dementia UK is important to the residents’ relatives and to our team.

“Everyone is joining in organising the day, with the team and residents helping to make the cakes and friends and family also helping out. We are even having a tea tasting so that people can try teas from around the world.”

As well as making and decorating cakes for the event, residents are also creating plant holders out of teapots and filling them with spring flowers. Pamela said: “The theme of the event is ‘Time for as Cuppa’ so the residents decided to create the themed pots.

“We have many residents who have loved cooking or gardening all their lives. People think that moving into a home is the end of a person’s hobbies but the opposite is true here. We try to encourage people to maintain their interests as it is part of who they are and it keeps up their cognitive skills.”

The event, at the home in Spook Hill, runs from 10am to 4pm and Pamela and her team of qualified dementia carers will be on hand to talk to anyone who has any questions about the condition, or who is caring for a loved one with dementia.

She added: “Sometimes it just helps to have someone to talk to who has experienced similar things and can understand what you are going through.”
